MEET THE SPEAKERS: SHIPPING SESSION

MEET THE SPEAKERS: SHIPPING SESSION

How can an industry as global and capital-intensive as shipping achieve net-zero in 2050? What national, European and international regulations affect how, and how fast transport sectors can decarbonise? What can the maritime industry do to activate and accelerate change? We look forward to discussing decarbonisation pathways for Shipping with representatives of KVNR (Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners), Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management.

The speakers in the Shipping session, part of the upcoming ERC event DECARBONISATION PATHWAYS FOR TRANSPORT hosted by Shell and Deloitte at Louwman Museum on 14 November 2024 are:
  • Annet Koster, Director, KVNR (Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners)
  • Johan Byskov Svendsen, Head of Program - Catalyze Ecosystem Transition, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping
  • Martine Hoeksma, Unit Lead Sustainable Shipping, Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management
“Green corridors are essential to initiate the decarbonisation of global shipping,” says Johan Byskov Svendsen, Head of Program - Catalyze Ecosystem Transition, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. “The biggest challenge is in bridging the cost gap between fossil and alternative fuels. Getting the zero-emission fuel price down is important. And at the same time, clear guidance from regulators about pricing emissions is needed. In the short term we need public funding to make green corridors happen.”

As a Program Manager at the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, Johan is in charge of maturing several Green Corridors projects, as well as projects serving the needs for the first movers in the decarbonisation of shipping. This includes work in Chile, Rotterdam-Singapore and Northern Europe-Baltic.

Annet Koster is Director of KVNR (Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners). The Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners brings shipping companies together that want to form a united front to protect and promote their common interests on a national, European and global level. KVNR represents shipping companies involved in merchant shipping and sea towage.

Former member of the ERC Steering Board on behalf of Shell, Martine Hoeksma, is currently Unit Lead Sustainable Shipping, Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management. Martine joined the Ministry at the start of 2024. She has a chemical engineering background. After a few years working as process engineer for an engineering company, she joined Shell in 2001 as energy- and environment technologist. Since then, she has become a seasoned environment and HSE professional through exposure to operational & corporate positions, in downstream & upstream, and in Europe & China.

The Shipping session is scheduled from 11:20 to 11:55 hrs.
